I've read the series and I highly recommend it. It is difficult to wrap your head around a few concepts at first but once you get past that, you have no trouble keeping up.
The trouble I struggled understanding is that the main character is a human extension of a spaceship. Spaceships have hundreds of these human extensions so think "hive mind" structure.
Second, because of this human/ship relationship, the concept of gender is confusing for the main character so they often refer to normal humans in contradicting pronouns. I still don't know what anybody's actual gender is – and it doesn't matter. Actually, I think it helps focus the story.
