Living in the bay area, a lot of our friends are of Asian background so they have this practice of removing their shoes when they enter a house.
I don't mind this and feel very comfortable take my shoes off when I visit and know they will at our house (even though we don't request it).
What I don't understand is why they all, and I mean all, leave their shoes in the most inconvenient place. No matter how much room there is, each person leaves their shoes right in the middle if the pathway, usually piled up at the doorway itself.
In this case, I cleared a path at my friends party three or four times and it kept getting blocked by the next group of visitors.
At our house, we have a large covered porch with two commercial size walk off mats and everyone flops them off right at the door, usually blocking the screen door.
This habit is contrary to everything I know about Asian culture. I'm beginning to think the karate kid 2 was nothing but a big lie.
