Looks like we need a new computer for my son to do school work on

Has to be Windows-based since we have to install certain programs. Nothing fancy and needs to be seriously cheap. Laptop preferred. Any suggestions?

We'll start with this as a base model…

  1. That Dell would probably be a good option for now until you could get a good laptop. That is the way I'd lean

But as far as laptops, here's another option. Fyi, I know price is king here, but I tend to make sure to avoid HP laptops, also try to avoid AMD but a lot of the low end models will be AMD. Here's a good option. Still refurbished which is always troubling on a laptop, but Acer is a brand I trust and has an i3 processor and a real hard drive (look out, a lot of budget models use non-upgradable flash memory for storage and it's really limited in space). I'll keep looking too.

  2. Out of curiosity, is this specific computer because you don't have a computer, or you don't have a windows pc for the software he needs? If you have a Mac for instance you can run windows virtually really well. But you'd have to share 😉

  3. + Jeremy Seifert we have a computer and an old laptop but we have two homeschool kids so it's best if they do computer work at the same time. That's why we're looking for cheap.

  4. As an IT professional. I am against buy underpowered cheap laptop. I am okay buy refurbished. Wasting everybody time when laptop didn't do the job they suppose to do.

  5. + Johnny Lai Yeah, definitely agree. I ran across several REALLY low-power versions of laptops that I did not pass along. i3 is probably the sweet spot for price/performance for what he's looking for I think.
